Burton: Cap-and-Trade Disaster Is Now A Reality
Under The Guise Of Greening America, House Democrats Have Passed A Massive Tax On American Industries and Consumers
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House passed the Cap-and-Trade energy legislation after House Democrats buckled to enormous pressure from Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Obama Administration. Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN) issued the following statement after the vote:
"The passage of Cap-and-Trade is a real tragedy for Indiana and the rest of the country. Speaker Pelosi and President Obama have rushed this bill to a vote and spent all week twisting arms and cutting deals with Democrats who were previously opposed to the bill. It's a shame they buckled, because if this bill passes the Senate, it will mean devastation for American jobs and family budgets.
"Cap-and-Trade is a tax that restricts the use of energy in America. As businesses have to adjust their balance sheets, they'll pass the cost of that tax onto consumers. Families will have to pay thousands of dollars more for electricity, gas, their groceries, and many other products--all while we're in the middle of the worst economic period since the Great Depression.
"Today, Speaker Pelosi and President Obama threw a wet blanket on our economy. And for what? At best, we get a negligible effect on the environment, but Hoosiers will bear a significant financial burden as a result of this tax."
