Free health care
Posted by Dan Burton on July 13, 2007
H.R. 15 essentially seeks to establish a national health system to provide all eligible individuals residing in the United States with free health care; including all medically necessary care, such as primary care and prevention, prescription drugs, emergency care, and mental health services. The goal of H.R. 15 is very noble and compassionate but the mechanism used to achieve this goal – a government-run health care system – has already been soundly rejected by the American people and the United States Congress. I agree with the many people who fear that a government-run health care system will take away their freedom of choice in medical care. Furthermore, we could be forced to pay huge new "health-care" taxes (such as the value added tax of five percent on each sale of property, performance of services, and importation of property in the United States included in H.R. 15), and eliminate medical and personal privacy. Americans do not want government attorneys and government bureaucrats - who are not medically trained - controlling what treatments and tests their doctor will be allowed to give them.
Health care is traditionally one of the most pressing issues facing Congress because it – either directly or indirectly – affects every American. I believe that the American people deserve affordable, accessible, high-quality healthcare of their own choosing. However, instead of nationalizing health care I believe that enacting new tax benefits would do a better job of reducing the number of uninsured Americans and addressing efficiency and equity problems in our health care system.
